Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden
The Hirschhorn is the Smithsonian's museum dedicated to contemporary and modern art from around the world, with a collection that focuses on the last 30 years. Works include pieces by de Kooning, Warhol, Picasso, and Giacometti in the permanent collection; the museum also hosts temporary exhibits and has an outdoor sculpture garden with six different "rooms." Themed tours are available for school groups with 4 weeks notice.
National Gallery of Art
The National Gallery of Art boasts art from around the world, stretching from today to the Middle Ages. Choose from a variety of themed tours to help students explore art from the museum's collection of over 110,000 pieces. Tours should be arranged at least 4 weeks in advance, and must have 10 or more students (with one chaperone for every 10). Themes range "Weather in Art" to "French Art" for high school students. Teachers can also lead groups on self-guided tours, which also require reservation.
National Museum of African Art
Part of the Smithsonian's network of museums, the National Museum of African Art holds pieces from Africa's past and present, including sculpture, textiles, tools, musical instruments, ceramics, and painting. The collection explores the intersection of African art within the entirety of art today, and with the cultures and religious beliefs found within Africa. Tours on various themes are available for students (see hours for thematic tours).
National Museum of the American Indian
The National Museum of the American Indian has three permanent exhibits at its Washington, DC site: "Our Universes: Traditional Knowledge Shapes Our World," which explores Native cosmology; "Our Peoples: Giving Voice to Our Histories," which examines the history of Native people since 1491; and "Our Lives: Contemporary Life and Identities," looking at the 21st century status of Native peoples. The museum, part of the Smithsonian, also has temporary exhibits. Groups can arrange for a reserved spot in the timed-entry line, and can also arrange for guided tours.

The Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery
These galleries, connected underground, contain exhibits on art from the US, China, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia, ancient Egyptian art, ancient Near Eastern art, and Islamic arts. Themed group tours which tie into the museum's collection can be reserved, during which students will have the opportunity to thoroughly study a few pieces in order to better understand them and their context. Reservations should be made at least 4 weeks beforehand.
