National Air and Space Museum
The National Air and Space Museum, part of the the Smithsonian Institution, is a worldwide hub for aviation history and research that stretches from the first flight to space shuttles and planetary science. The museum is divided into the National Mall building and the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center; students can see the Wright brothers' aircraft, the Enola Gay, and many other artifacts. Public tours are given each day at 10:30AM and 1PM. Groups of 20 and more can arrange for guided tours in advance, along with theater shows and special educational programs.
National Museum of Natural History
The National Museum of Natural History was created in 1910 as part of the Smithsonian Institution, and now contains over 125 million artifacts from the natural sciences. Students can learn about past and current plants, animals, and humans, and take in a show at the Johnson IMAX Theater. While there are no guided tours, students and chaperones can take part in self-guided tours and activities, or in the museum's Discovery Room and Naturalist Center, where groups can schedule visits for hands-on learning.
National Museum of the American Indian
The National Museum of the American Indian has three permanent exhibits at its Washington, DC site: "Our Universes: Traditional Knowledge Shapes Our World," which explores Native cosmology; "Our Peoples: Giving Voice to Our Histories," which examines the history of Native people since 1491; and "Our Lives: Contemporary Life and Identities," looking at the 21st century status of Native peoples. The museum, part of the Smithsonian, also has temporary exhibits. Groups can arrange for a reserved spot in the timed-entry line, and can also arrange for guided tours.
